With the new policy “National Education Policy (NEP) 2020” in place, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has revised its assessment and evaluation practises for students in Class IX, X, XI and XII for the academic year 2023-24.
In order to gradually align assessment with the NEP's vision, the board will integrate more competency-based questions in the Class X and XII Board examination.
As a result, the Question Paper for the upcoming session will include more Competency-Based Questions or questions that gauge how well concepts are applied in practical settings.
The following modifications will apply to the year-end board exams for classes IX to XII in 2023–24:
The Question Papers for the upcoming session will have more Competency-Based Questions. Composition of question papers for the year-end examination/ Board Examination (Theory) for Classes IX and X.

Competency Based Questions are 40% in the form of Multiple-Choice Questions, Case-Based Questions, Source Based Integrated Questions or any other type | Competency Focused Questions in the form of MCQs/Case Based Questions, Source-based Integrated Questions or any other type are 50% |
Objective Questions are 20% | Select response type questions(MCQ) are 20% |
Remaining 40% Questions are Short Answer/ Long Answer Questions | Constructed response questions (Short Answer/Long Answer type Questions, as per existing pattern) are 30% |
